John, you have, for years stressed an approach to Reformed theology that is
both hard-thinking and deep-feeling. Each of us will tend to fall on one side
or the other, either an anti-intellectual feeling, or an anti-feeling
intellectualism. Both are to be avoided. In today’s question, a listener wants
to know this: “Dear Pastor John, in your 30+ years of ministry, what have you
practically done to avoid mere intellectualism — cold academic study — in your
Bible reading and in your exposition?”
1) The first thing
I would say is that I need to be, we need to be, deeply persuaded that this
really, really matters: this non-cold, non-intellectualistic, warm, practical,
affectionate relation to the living Christ. We need to be persuaded. This
really matters because there are a lot of people out there — I keep bumping
into them — there are a lot of people out there who either for personality
reasons or sometimes theological reasons think it doesn’t matter what your
emotions do. That is, they think emotions are the caboose at the end of the
train. They are just not essential at all. And it sounds like the person who
wrote this question is persuaded that they matter, and it might be good to ask
why. And here is my reason.
The first and
greatest commandment is not to know the Lord our God — which is, of course,
assumed — but to love the Lord your God. And that includes with all your heart
(Matthew 22:36–37). And Paul says at the end of 1 Corinthians: If you don’t
love the Lord you are accursed (1 Corinthians 16:22). Love the Lord. And Jesus
says, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and
whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew
10:37). In other words, the love that we must have isn’t just a kind of dutiful,
commandment-keeping love. That is not what you have for your kids, nor your
parents. It is the deepest, heartfelt, affectionate, relative kind of love, the
kind we have for mother and father and son and daughter — only more, more for
Jesus. And if we don’t have it, we are not worthy of Jesus.
So, this is the
first thing I would say. We must be totally, John Piper must be totally
persuaded that knowing God truly without loving him duly is eternally deadly,
deadly. I must be persuaded of that. So, I am trembling at the thought that I
could go about my academic work or my scholarly work or my writing work or
preaching work or study work in some kind of cold frame with no awakened love
for God, affection for God. So, the quest for overcoming what he is referring
to as intellectualism is a life and death battle. That is the first thing.
2) The second thing
I would say is that we should therefore read all things — Scripture and
everything else, especially the word; the Scripture, but also the world and
everything in it — we should read everything on the lookout for evidences of
God’s value, not just evidences of his truth. The devil owns that God is true
and probably knows more true things about God than we do. But the devil will
not own that God is supremely valuable and supremely satisfying. The devil
values himself above God. God’s presence gives no joy and no satisfaction to
the devil whatsoever.
Therefore, our aim
in reading the Bible should not be demonic. We are not aiming to rise just to
the level of the devil. Our aim is, of course, to see what is really there,
what is true about God — but always more, always more; namely, with a view to
feeling what is valuable about God, treasuring the treasure that God is. The
aim is to see the millions of reasons why God is a treasure, not just the
millions of evidences that God exists or has certain attributes. All of our
theological refinement should be for the sake of doxological embrace and
enjoyment. This affects the way you read. This is what I try to do. I try to
read. You read on the lookout for evidences of value, evidences of
preciousness, evidences that he is beautiful and sweet and satisfying.
Peter says in 1
Peter 2:1–3, “Long for the pure, spiritual milk” — and I think he means the
milk of the word — “that by it you may grow up into salvation — if indeed you
have tasted that the Lord is good.” What is the point of that if: if you have
tasted? The point is that all the drinking in the world without tasting will
not grow us up into salvation. The aim of drinking the word is tasting the
Savior. It is the tasting that is the nutritional encounter with the living God
that grows us up into salvation. So, that is the second thing I would say. In all
of our reading, be on the lookout for evidences of God’s value, not just
evidences of his truth.
3) Which leads now
to the third thing that I would say, namely, that the goal of valuing or
treasuring or feeling the preciousness of or enjoying the beauty of God in all
of our reading confronts me immediately with the impossibility on my part of
making it happen. You can’t make yourself value God. You can make yourself
read. You can make yourself list off attributes of God that you see. You can
make yourself list of ways that God behaves. But you can’t make yourself feel
how wonderful they are. That is why the psalmist cries: Open my eyes that I may
see wonders in your Word (Psalm 119:18).
So, the third point
is: Pray, pray, pray. And we pray not only for illumination to see what is
really there about God, but to feel. We pray Psalm 90:14, “Satisfy [me] in the
morning with your steadfast love.” Why in the world would the psalmist pray
that, except that the human heart doesn’t naturally feel it when it hears and
sees the beauties of God? God has to work this. We ask God to make us satisfied
in God. So, prayer is absolutely essential not only that my eyes would be open,
but that my affections would be awakened.
4) The fourth thing
I would say is that, beyond the Bible, I read authors who have understood God
deeply and felt him mightily and expressed both the understanding and the
feeling with clarity and power. For me, that has been mainly Jonathan Edwards
and John Owen and C.S. Lewis and the Puritans. You need to find the great seers
of God and the great lovers of God and the great expressers of the seeing and
the loving, so that they can feed your soul with true and large affections.
I know you, Tony,
would put John Newton in that category and so would I — kind of a latter-day
Puritan who saw things deeply and expressed things beautifully and felt things
deeply. So that is number four.
5) And then,
finally, I would say: Open your mouth and bear witness to family and friends
and neighbors and colleagues to the beauty of God and your joy in him. It is
precisely in giving expression to our joy that intensifies the joy itself. A
shared joy is a doubled joy. God loves mission. God loves witness. God loves
sharing. God loves loving people. And he does not love hoarding. Therefore,
when we turn on our affections and express them to other people, God is pleased
and our joy is intensified.
So, those are my five strategies against cold intellectualism. There are lots more strategies, but maybe that is enough to set the trajectory of discovery.

what it means to seek Him. I've learned that seeking God is much more than
filling my head with more information about Him. Seeking God is a daily pursuit
for His manifest presence. This article by John Piper has helped me in
explaining what the Bible has to say about seeking the presence of God.

What Does It Mean to Seek the Lord?

Seeking the Lord means seeking his presence. “Presence” is a common translation of the Hebrew word “face.” Literally, we are to seek his “face.” But this is the Hebraic way of having access to God. To be before his face is to be in his presence.
But aren’t his children always in his presence? Yes and no. Yes in two senses: First, in the sense that God is omnipresent and therefore always near everything and everyone. He holds everything in being. His power is ever-present in sustaining and governing all things.
And second, yes, he is always present with his children in the sense of his covenant commitment to always stand by us and work for us and turn everything for our good. “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
When He’s Not with Us
But there is a sense in which God’s presence is not with us always. For this reason, the Bible repeatedly calls us to “seek the Lord . . . seek his presence continually.” God’s manifest, conscious, trusted presence is not our constant experience. There are seasons when we become neglectful of God and give him no thought and do not put trust in him and we find him “unmanifested” — that is, unperceived as great and beautiful and valuable by the eyes of our hearts.
His face — the brightness of his personal character — is hidden behind the curtain of our carnal desires. This condition is always ready to overtake us. That is why we are told to “seek his presence continually.” God calls us to enjoy continual consciousness of his supreme greatness and beauty and worth.
What It Means to Seek
This happens through “seeking.” Continual seeking. But what does that mean practically? Both the Old and New Testaments say it is a “setting of the mind and heart” on God. It is the conscious fixing or focusing of our mind’s attention and our heart’s affection on God.
“Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God.” (1 Chronicles 22:19)
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mindson things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:1–2)
A Conscious Choice
This setting of the mind is the opposite of mental coasting. It is a conscious choice to direct the heart toward God. This is what Paul prays for the church: “May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thessalonians 3:5). It is a conscious effort on our part. But that effort to seek God is a gift from God.
We do not make this mental and emotional effort to seek God because he is lost. That’s why we would seek a coin or a sheep. But God is not lost. Nevertheless, there is always something through which or around which we must go to meet him consciously. This going through or around is what seeking is. He is often hidden. Veiled. We must go through mediators and around obstacles.
The heavens are telling the glory of God. So we can seek him through that. He reveals himself in his word. So we can seek him through that. He shows himself to us in the evidences of grace in other people. So we can seek himthrough that. The seeking is the conscious effort to get through the natural means to God himself — to constantly set our minds toward God in all our experiences, to direct our minds and hearts toward him through the means of his revelation. This is what seeking God means.
Obstacles to Avoid
And there are endless obstacles that we must get around in order to see him clearly, and so that we can be in the light of his presence. We must flee spiritually dulling activities. We must run from them and get around them. They are blocking our way.
We know what makes us vitally sensitive to God’s appearances in the world and in the word. And we know what dulls us and blinds us and makes us not even want to seek him. These things we must move away from and go aroundif we would see God. That is what seeking God involves.
And as we direct our minds and hearts Godward in all our experiences, we cry out to him. This too is what seeking him means.
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)
“If you will seek God and plead with the Almighty for mercy . . . ” (Job 8:5)
Seeking involves calling and pleading. O Lord, open my eyes. O Lord, pull back the curtain of my own blindness. Lord, have mercy and reveal yourself. I long to see your face.
Humility Essential
The great obstacle to seeking the Lord is pride. “In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him” (Psalm 10:4). Therefore, humility is essential to seeking the Lord.
The great promise to those who seek the Lord is that he will be found. “If you seek him, he will be found by you” (1 Chronicles 28:9). And when he is found, there is great reward. “Whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). God himself is our greatest reward. And when we have him, we have everything. Therefore, “Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!”

The Importance of Singing

Rather than thinking of personal preferences and reasons why I think we should sing, I have been challenged to look at what the Bible has to say about singing. It is easy for me to encourage singing; I'm a musician and love music! But what if we don't think we can sing, or feel like we can't connect to God when we sing? This article has been one of the resources in helping me find out what Scripture has to say about these issues. My prayer is that our congregation, along with myself, will grow in our understanding of how important singing is in the life of the church.In Christ,

... In this post, I simply want to explore some thoughts from Scripture about singing. If Don’s post is any indicator, and I think it is, a lot of us may not be that clear on why God wants us to sing. And no, I’m not writing this out of concern for my job security…I’ve been a musician for 50 years, so singing makes sense to me. But I know there are plenty of non-musical Christians in the world. People who don’t like to sing. People who sound terrible when they sing. People who have been told they can’t sing. People who don’t “get” singing. And people like Don, who aren’t able to “connect with God” when they sing. Should they be encouraged to sing?
I could tell you what I think based on my experience. But I’d rather take you to God’s Word.
Singing in the Bible
There are almost fifty exhortations to sing in Scripture, as well as four hundred references to singing. Two of those passages (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16) instruct us to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God and to one another. These aren’t suggestions, preferences, or good ideas. They’re commands. Which means God intends for us to obey them.Since everyone isn’t a musician, how do these apply to us? Why does God want us to sing?
1. Singing is more a matter of our hearts than our voices.
Years ago Ronald Allen wrote in his book Worship: Rediscovering the Missing Jewel:
“When a non-singer becomes a Christian, he or she becomes a singer. Not all are blessed with a finely tuned ear and a well modulated voice; so the sound may not be superb-it may even be out-of-tune and off-key. Remember: worship is a state of heart; musical sound is a state of art. Let’s not confuse them.”
We sing and make melody to the Lord with our hearts (Ephesians 5:19). The sounds we make affect those around us, for better or worse. But God hears what no one else can. It’s the song of the Redeemed for our great Redeemer. It’s a song we didn’t originate and can’t improve upon. It’s true that those who led the singing at the temple were trained and skilled in music for the Lord (1 Chronicles 25:7). But there’s no indication either in the early church or in Revelation’s depiction of heaven that anyone gets a pass when it comes to singing praises to God. Even if we can’t sing a note, we can still sing in our hearts.
2. Singing helps us remember words.
Throughout Scripture, God reminds his people of their tendency to forget his promises, commands, and warnings. In Deuteronomy 31, as Israel is about to enter the promised land, God tells Moses that his people will turn to idols after they enter Canaan. He then instructs Moses to teach the Israelites a song, so that, “when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring)” (Deuteronomy 31:21). We sing to remember God’s word, and most of all, the word of Christ, or the gospel (Colossians 3:16). Science has confirmed that we remember words, patterns, and categories more easily when words are set to music. It’s why hardly anyone can quote a John Wesley sermon, yet most people know the words to Charles Wesley’s “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing.”3. Singing expresses and engages our emotions.
In every culture, music is a language of emotion that helps express what we feel. So David writes, “My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed” (Psalms 71:23). The words of his redeemed soul overflow into song. It’s why musicals are so popular, why we sing our country’s national anthem, and why every revival since the Reformation has been accompanied by an outpouring of new songs. As John Piper said in a sermon,
“The reason we sing is because there are depths and heights and intensities and kinds of emotion that will not be satisfactorily expressed by mere prosaic forms, or even poetic readings. There are realities that demand to break out of prose into poetry and some demand that poetry be stretched into song.”
At the same time, music engages our emotions. In Matthew 11:17 Jesus implies that music can lead us to either dance or mourn. It can draw out a variety of feelings including romance, peace, joy, fear, playfulness, sadness, or awe. Singing can help us feel the truth more deeply.
4. Singing reflects the nature of God.
The Father sings over his redeemed people (Zephaniah 3:17). Jesus sings with us in the midst of the congregation (Hebrews 2:12). One of the fruits of being filled with the Spirit is singing (Ephesians 5:18-19). We worship a triune God who sings, and he wants us to be like him.5. Singing together reflects and deepens our unity in the gospel.
Being together in the same room is one way we can express our unity. But singing together draws attention to that bond as we sing the same words at the same time. In fact, Paul uses a musical analogy when he wants to encourage gospel-driven unity: “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Colossians 3:14).Connecting with God
There are more reasons to consider, but this is a blog post, not a book (which I’m currently writing). God never promised we would connect with him through singing. The way we “connect with him” is through faith in the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ, that paid for our sins and reconciled us to God (Hebrews 10:19-22; 1 Peter 3:18). The way we express that faith are wonderfully varied – working, playing, serving, proclaiming, gathering, etc. But we have no reason to abandon God’s good gift of singing in the name of being more genuine. God knows how we work. And he’s appointed singing to be one way we deepen our relationship with him and each other.The singing in your church may be dreadful. Your voice might sound like a cross between a beached whale and an alley cat in heat. Singing might make you feel uncomfortable. Those who lead the singing in your church might do it poorly. And if there’s anything we can do to change the situation, we should.
But our confidence and comfort in singing comes from this: Jesus, our great high priest, makes all our offerings acceptable to God through his perfect life of obedience and his perfect sacrifice of atonement. The Father loves our singing not only because it’s sincere, but because when offered through faith, it sounds just like his beloved Son.
And besides. One day we’ll all have better voices and our songs will far surpass anything we’ve sung here. It’s then we’ll realize that eternity won’t be long enough to contain the songs worthy of the Lamb who was slain.
